ANGEL STORE BEGINNINGS
Carmel Valley resident Dorothy McEwen founded the Carmel Valley Angel Project in about 1995, originally as a Holiday “Store” set up to provide toys, books, clothing, sleeping bags, blankets, school supplies, food and more for those who don't have the resources to have a bountiful Christmas. Over the years the store has changed some, but continues to be provided by a volunteer team. Gifts for the children are provided by generous residents donating them in tandem with our team of experienced buyers who hit the stores with a list created from knowledge of the needs of the community. Each family has a specified time scheduled to come and do their holiday "shopping." Please join our generous individuals, civic groups and businesses who help create a wonderful memory for local families.
In 2018, 75 families, providing gifts for their 167 children and teens, were able to receive this extra help to make their holidays special. The shopping committee searches all year for the best bargains and definitely takes advantage of Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales. New toys and gift items are also collected in holiday barrels placed at various businesses around November 1. Businesses, civic groups and individuals are encouraged to "Borrow a Barrel" for their Christmas parties and ask their guests to provide an item. (See locations on Donate page.) The generosity of our community is amazing and provides almost all the toys needed for the children.
Besides providing toys, the store offers practical items like fleece jackets, socks, and books. The store also provides games, food staples, and fresh produce. A knitting group also provides beautiful knitted items families may choose as well.
Students at Tularcitos Elementary School stuff collect stocking stuffer items with goodies for elementary aged children. A women's group at St Dunstan's church fills our shelves in with lovely new books for the age levels needed. A local Girl Scout Troop provides fresh baked cookies for volunteers and shoppers. and another one decorates large gift bags for the effort.
Special thanks to the parishioners of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, and to the board of directors of the Carmel Valley Recreation and Park District for their participation.
If you are able to volunteer in the store, please send us a message through the form below. If you are able to make a tax-deductible donation for the shopping list, you may use the secure donate button on our DONATE page or simply mail a check to:
