HOW WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE ALL YEAR 'ROUND

Picture

ABOUT OUR PROJECTS

The Thanksgiving feast is a major undertaking.
Our volunteers take registrations and follow up with the registrants; plan and shop for the food; prepare a full traditional Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings; decorate the Carmel Valley Youth Center inside and out and set a full table with tablecloths, china and silverware; serve a full meal; and then clean up.  Local musicians provide music and song.  Local students volunteer and get credit toward their community service graduation requirement.  Without the Carmel Valley Kiwanis; the numerous chefs, restaurants and kitchens that donated their facilities and staff; and our student volunteers, this event would not have been possible.  This year, we served 434 meals, not including meals delivered to residents of Rippling River and Pacific Meadows.  Leftovers were donated to other local nonprofits for distribution to their constituents.
The Holiday store is another major endeavor.
Our volunteers plan and shop throughout the year for winter jackets that parents can select based on their children’s size and style preferences.  Local school children donate toys and other stocking stuffers that parents can pick out to put in holiday stockings for their children.  Local knitters knit and donate beautiful handknit scarves, hats and hand warmers. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church lets us use its community hall free of charge.  Our wonderful Spanish-speaking volunteer makes sure that those whose first language is Spanish are contacted, confirmed, and able to participate.  This year, we provided gifts to 79 families, representing 180 children ranging in age from newborns to 18 years old.
We are excited about our new partnerships and increased community impact and look forward to similar activities in the new year.
Working with the Friends of Cachagua Children’s Center was a new relationship that had a measurable impact at the Cachagua Little School by supporting student needs, expanding access to learning resources, and fostering a safe, nurturing environment for children in this very rural part of our beautiful Carmel Valley.  We look forward to building on this effort in the coming year.  Similarly, it was gratifying to see Tatum’s Treehouse playground become a reality, providing a safe and fun place for children of all ages and capabilities, and allowing the disabled and elderly to share the experience with their children.  We will continue to look for opportunities like this.  We also expanded our meals to include Pacific Meadows residents, and will look for similar communities that might benefit from our holiday meal activities.
